Built in 1923, this beautiful Old Village home exudes all the charm and character of a classic Rockcliffe Park property. The interior of the house underwent a complete renovation in 2009 and has a striking contemporary feel that contrasts with the traditional style of the exterior. The house is nestled privately behind a tall hedge on a quiet street in the Old Village and is surrounded by flagstone patios that wind through the landscaped garden to a pond and patio at the back of the house. A wide, slate staircase leads to a lovely covered entry to the house.

Inside, the living room, dining room and kitchen have an open plan design. Maple flooring contrasts beautifully with the dramatic walls and the black granite counters of the kitchen. Square columns and a free standing wall provide definition between the spaces. A gorgeous antique wood fireplace with a granite hearth is the focal point of the living room which is bright and inviting. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen and has dramatic draperies and lighting. It features deep baseboards and a chair rail that extends to the living room.

The kitchen features a wall of custom cabinetry and a large island with an incredible curved granite breakfast bar with seating for six, computer desk, wine rack and cabinetry. An eating area looks onto the family room below which offers lovely views of the patio and pond and has two full walls of windows.

A fantastic feature of the home is the main floor guest suite with its own separate entrance. The suite features a bright bedroom with a four-piece ensuite bathroom and a living / dining room that has a kitchenette.

On the second floor of the home there are three bright and spacious bedrooms, two of which have walk-in closets and all of which have gorgeous ensuite bathrooms. Each bathroom features a separate glass shower with a rain-head and wall shower and a vanity. The beautiful master suite is filled with natural sunlight that flows through a large picture window. It has a sloped ceiling which adds drama and a lovely four-piece ensuite and walk-in closet. The laundry is conveniently located on the second floor landing.

The staircase leading to the basement has windows onto the family room and allows light into the space. The basement has been fully finished to incorporate a large recreation room that has a television area, a games area and bookcases. There is also a private office, storage room and a full bathroom on this level.

This home has great character and privacy and is in a fantastic location. The renovation has been wonderfully executed making for a bright and happy family home.

Historic 63 MacKinnon Road

by Michael Tross
One of Rockcliffe Park Village’s oldest houses, 63 MacKinnon Road is virtually unique in retaining an exterior that has remained largely unchanged in appearance since it was constructed by Ottawa Senators captain Eddie Gerard and his brother John Y. Gerard in 1923.

The Gerards, who to this date still live on MacKinnon Road, are Rockcliffe Park’s longest resident family. Gerards have been living on MacKinnon Road for the past 109 years – since 1903. Eddie Gerard, captain of the Ottawa Senators in the 1920’s, led the Senators to three Stanley Cups from 1920-23 and was one of a handful of legendary players who formed the first group of inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In addition to helping his brother John and John’s wife Ruth build 63 MacKinnon Road, Eddie lived next door at # 49, another brother Tom lived next door (#79) on the other side of 63 MacKinnon and their parents, William and Anne lived in the house next door to #79, on the corner of MacKinnon and Minto Place, two doors from 63 MacKinnon Road.

So, for many decades, all four houses on the north side of MacKinnon Road were occupied by the Gerard family.

63 MacKinnon would be instantly recognizable to Eddie, Jack and Ruth if they were to stroll down MacKinnon Road today.

Although the major renovation of 2008-2009 transformed the interior to that of an elegant and sophisticated modern home, 63 MacKinnon retains the spirit and memories of a great hockey and Rockcliffe Park Village family.
